SENDERISMO EN LA ZONA DE QUEENSTOWN: ATLEY TRACK

Aprovechando otro de los poquísimos días de Sol que disfrutamos por Otago nos fuimos de paseo al Atley Track.

El Atley Track es un recorrido fácil pero largo que transcurre por las montañas de Queenstown siguiendo el curso del río Atley y por el que se sube al Mount Dewar, que es a donde fuimos nosotros.

El recorrido entero es interesante de realizar en caso de estar interesados en la historia de la minería de oro de la zona. Nosotros fuimos más por las vistas que el Departamento de Conservación prometía que había desde la cima del Mount Dewar que por otra cosa.

El recorrido empieza en un mirador que hay en la carretera que lleva a Coronet Peak (una de las estaciones de esquí de la zona) desde el que se sigue una carretera de un solo carril de puro barro, con pendientes muy pronunciadas, desprendimientos rocosos, precipicios y cabras diabólicas. Afortunadamente nada de esto pilla por sorpresa ya que lo avisan en un cartel enorme.

Una vez pasado este tramo de camino para 4x4 se salta una valla de alambre y se entra en terreno privado. Por ahí se sigue un camino que serpentea hasta la cima del Mount Dewar donde las vistas no defraudan en absoluto.

Desde la dicha cima se podría tener una bonita panorámica de 360 grados pero hay una montaña enorme que lo evita. El Ben Lomond. Qué fastidio. Así que para poder ver el paisaje desde arriba del todo habrá que ir hasta la cima del Ben Lomond… y de esto irá la próxima actualización.

TRAMPING AROUND QUEENSTOWN: ATLEY TRACK

To make the most of these amazing but unusual Otago sunny days we get in winter, we went for a walk to the Atley track.

Atley track is an easy but long walk on the Queenstown hills following Atley River and climbing up to Mount Dewar, the peak we went to.

The whole route is specially recommended in case one is into history as the track passes by old gold mining spots. However, our main point to go there were the amazing views from the top of Mount Dewar that the DOC leaflet promises.

The adventure starts in the car park/lookout in the Coronet Peak (one of the main ski fields in the area) road. After this car park, the road becomes a very steep single lane track of mud and stones with cliffs on one side and evil goats on the other. Luckily, there’s a clever screen explaining these conditions to the drivers at the very beginning.

So we drove our car on this road and broke it. Kidding!!! We left our dearest car in the car park and walked the road up to the beginning of the track.

After the 4WD track we had to jump a fence to start the actual hike which runs on private land. This is quite normal in New Zealand and DOC builds this cute little stairs for trampers to climb the fences. Thank you! The track is wide and very clear at least up to Mount Dewar where the views didn’t leave us down.

From this summit we could have had a good 360º panoramic view but a huge mountain stands on the west of your sight. That’s Ben Lomond. What a bothering mountain! I suppose we should climb it to have a definitely stunning view of the Queenstown surroundings. But we’ll tell you about it our next post.
