Para celebrar el cumpleaños de Marina nos fuimos de excursión, concretamente a subir el Lady Macdonald en Canmore, acompañados de Priska, la repostera del The Post Hotel.
Como siempre en las Rocosas parece que lo más difícil de subir montañas es encontrar el principio del camino, o “trailhead" como lo llaman aquí.
En fin, una vez encontrado el camino, justo saliendo del final del Cougar Creek nos encontramos con el típico cartel de siempre avisando acerca de los osos negros y los osos grizzlies, pero esta vez avisaba también sobre los pumas. Lindos gatitos.
El camino es muy empinado desde el principio hasta la cima. Empieza siendo un camino de arena dura entre el bosque de pinos, con ocasionales rocas y algunas ventanas hacia el valle del río Bow. Es muy bonito y, al estar a la sombra, fresquito.
Pasada algo más de una hora se llega a una zona de rocas enormes con musgo, algún que otro pino y ya vistas hacia el valle y hacia la cima, donde pudimos empezar a entender la que se nos venía encima.
Pasado el campo de rocas se supera la linea de árboles y se llega al famoso paisaje de las rocosas: el pedregal previo a la cima.
Subimos haciendo eses por el pedregal, un poco como pudimos pero cada vez con más confianza y velocidad ya que al paso que vamos nos estamos haciendo unos expertos en lo que aquí llaman “scrambling”.
Una vez en la cima sur del Lady Macdonald, del tamaño de un coche, seguimos por la cresta de la montaña hacia la cima norte. Lo dejamos a medias ya que ambas cimas están a la misma altura y la cresta que íbamos siguiendo era tan estrecha que debíamos avanzar a horcajadas.
Nos sentamos un ratito ahí arriba, con un precipicio de 1 km a nuestra espalda y con otro de algo menos de 1 km en frente. Las vistas eran espectaculares, com siempre.

HIKING AROUND KANANASKIS: LADY MACDONALD (2606 m)
To celebrate my birthday we went hiking with Priska, our Swiss pastry chef at The Post Hotel, to Lady Macdonald in Canmore.
This was one of those trails that the hardest part seems to be finding the trailhead. Starts in Cougar creek and the parking lot is way away from anything similar to a forest but by a creek that you have to follow to get to the start.
Just a few meters after the trailhead there’s that usual screen with information about black and grizzly bears: how to deal with an encounter, how to prevent encounters, etc. But at the back of the board there were more warnings, in this case about cougars. Awesome.
The track goes up really steep from the very beginning. The first section is under a pine forest and the ground is well compacted soft soil with few roots and rocks. Along this part there’re openings with stunning views of the Bow valley. It’s an easy beautiful, shady and cool walk here.
After about an hour on this, the terrain changes to big rocks, some covered in moss, less trees and constant views of the valley and the summit. From here you get your first chance to see what the scramble was going to be like.
After the tree line we reached a narrow and flat stretch where there use to be a tea house and a helicopter patch. Right after that, there’s only a scree.
We navigated on the scree switching backs and doing our best on the tedious task of taking a step forward after another without sliding in between.
We got to the South summit of Lady Macdonald which is as small as a car would be and walked on the ridge towards the North summit. We didn’t get there because the path was really narrow and exposed and we didn’t feel ready for this kind of scramble. The elevation is pretty much the same so we don’t think we missed much of a view.
We sat down there for a little while though with 1 km drop at our back and a bit less than the same distance at the front. The views were just breathtaking, as always in the Rockies!
