SENDERISMO EN LA ZONA DE QUEENSTOWN: SINGLE CONE

Después de nuestra aventura en la zona del Lake Alta la idea de escalar el Single Cone empezó a rondar nuestra mente. El pico más alto de las Remarkables, con 2319 m, al que los locales dicen que hay que subir con cuerdas, en un día sin nubes ni viento y que se tarda casi 10 horas entre subir y bajar.

Después del tiempo que llevamos viviendo en Glenorchy sabemos de sobras que los tiempos que se avisan por aquí son extremadamente exagerados y que los “locales” no han subido una montaña en su vida. Así que, con todo el respeto del mundo por la montaña, James y yo nos decidimos a escalarla. No os penséis que fuimos a las bravas como unos domingueros cualquiera, James es un experto escalador y llevábamos todo el material en el coche, que nunca se sabe.

El día que decidimos subir fue meteorológicamente perfecto: sol abrasador (literalmente ya que aquí la capa de ozono brilla por su ausencia) y nada de viento.

Llegamos a la zona del Lake Alta, trazamos el plan de ataque de la cumbre y hacia allá nos fuimos, con valentía.

Fuimos carenando con todo el cuidado del mundo ya que no había margen de error: teníamos precipicios a ambos lados y las rocas eran muy afiladas. Afortunadamente la superficie de las rocas es como papel de lija así que no había riesgo de resbalones. Es una montaña muy parecida al Pedraforca.

Los últimos 200 metros son de escalada pura y dura por unas paredes rocosas que, al no ser verticales del todo, pueden hacerse sin cuerdas si no hace viento y vas con alguien experto en la materia, como era el caso. El reto no era ascender, como ya podía imaginarse uno, sino descender, qué impresión.

Al final estuvimos un par de minutos en la cima y bajamos con pies y manos de plomo en uno de los recorridos más desafiantes y peliagudos que he hecho. La excursión entera nos llevó unas 6 horas.

Evidentemente después de escuchar nuestras aventuras Marina se muere de ganas de ascender al Single Cone.

HIKING AROUND QUEENSTOWN: SINGLE CONE

After the adventure in Lake Alta the idea of climbing the Single Cone peak got stuck in our minds. This is the highest point in the Remarkables, with 2319 m, the use of ropes and mountaineering gear is advised and, apparently, completing the route takes about 10 hours return in a clear sunny and not windy day.

However, we know that the estimated times found in DOC vouchers and most information leaflets are extremely exaggerated and that most “so called locals” haven’t been up a hill in their lives. Then, with all the respect in the world for the mountain, Enrique and James decided to attempt a climb to Single Cone. They didn’t go like I’d go for a relaxed after-work run in Mt Judah, nope. James’s an experienced rock climber and they had all the gear ready to use in case there was the need.

It turned up that the day they chose was meteorologically perfect: scorching sunny (literally) and completely still.

From Lake Alta they worked out the route they’ll follow and there they went, confidently.

They walked along the crest of the mountain, very carefully, no mistake could be afforded: cliffs in both sides and very sharp rocks in the slopes. Luckily, the ground surface is rough as sand paper and slipping in a dry day nearly impossible.

The last 200 m ran over rock walls that were not completely vertical so could be climbed with no ropes or other gear if you have some experience rock climbing and it isn’t windy. Nevertheless the tricky part wasn’t going up but going down, impressive!

After a few minutes at the very top they started their way down slowly but steady through one of the most challenging tracks Enrique says he’s done. It took them around 6 hours to do the whole climb, not 10 as DOC says.

In the meantime, I was at work. So you can imagine how jealous I feel and how looking forward to climb Single Cone I am.
