De las excursiones más famosas o conocidas del Parque Nacional los Glaciares ya habíamos hecho y descrito en este blog la Laguna de los Tres, la Loma del Pliegue Tumbado, el Chorrillo del Salto, el Mirador de los Cóndores y el Mirador de las Águilas; en la zona de El Chaltén sólo nos quedaba la Laguna Torre, que es posiblemente la excursión más emblemática.
Salimos a las 8 de la mañana en lo que puede haber sido el mejor día que ha visto El Chaltén en años: no hacía nada de viento y no había ni una nube en el cielo.
Había bastantes excursionistas a pesar de ser todavía temporada baja; la caminata hacia la Laguna Torre es la más llana de la zona y, a pesar de ser 12 km hasta llegar a la laguna (que luego hay que desandar si no se acampa en el Campamento Agostini), es perfectamente asequible para personas de todas las edades.
A la media hora de caminar ya se ve por primera vez el impresionante Cerro Torre con sus tres agujas verticales. Hay quién lo escala.
El camino, una vez pasada la primera media horita de subida, es prácticamente llano y transcurre por bosques de lengas que, según avisan, es zona de huemules (el ciervo emblema nacional de Chile).
Escondimos las mochilas en el bosque en la zona de la intersección con el camino hacia el Campamento Poincenot, donde íbamos a acampar, y seguimos hacia la Laguna Torre ya sin tanto peso.
La llegada a la Laguna Torre es impresionante: se va siguiendo el río hasta la morrena, que se atraviesa a lo bruto por encima (es muy fácil) y de repente aparece ante tí el lago del Glaciar Torre lleno de icebergs, con la pared de hielo al final (estilo Perito Moreno) y el Cerro Torre al fondo.
Una vez ahí nos dedicamos a rodear el lago y a hacer fotos, entre ellas la de la felicitación de Navidad de este año, que ahora que vuelve a haber una oficina de Correos de Chile en Puerto Natales podremos enviar.

HIKING AROUND EL CHALTÉN: LAGUNA TORRE
Out of the many world famous hikes that can be done around El Chaltén we had already enjoyed the Laguna de los Tres (the base of the Fitz Roy), hte Loma del Pliegue Tumbado, the Chorrillo del Salto and the Cóndores and Águilas lookouts. We only had Laguna Torre left to do, which is probably the most representative trek of the region.
We left the hostel ready to spend a couple of days in the woods at around 8 a.m. in what may have been the best day El Chaltén had seen in ages: blue skies and no wind.
There were quite a few hikers despite still being low season, but the Laguna Torre hike is the flattest one around. Almost everybody can enjoy the 12 km up to the lake and the 12 km back to town without fainting.
Just about half an hour after starting to walk we could see the mighty Cerro Torre for the first time with its three spectacular needles piercing the sky. There are crazy folks that actually climb this beast.; many of them from the Basque Country.
The track, once you’ve reached the first lookout, is completely flat and goes through this beautiful lenga forest.
We decided to hide our heavy backpacks behind a tree in the intersection between the track that leads to the Laguna Torre and the one that goes to Poincenot Campground, where we were going to camp for the night.
We reached Laguna Torre almost by surprise: we climbed the moraine and then the impressive glacial lake was there, with its icebergs floating around and the ice wall at the end.
Once there we started fooling around taking pictures and going up and down the rock walls of the the moraine. We even had time to take the Christmas Card picture!
